App that refills screen time limit when you walk away

A screen-time blocker where unused minutes refill proportionally the longer you stay away, rewarding early walk-aways instead of resetting only after full use.

Blocking App That Can Refill Time When Walk Away

Is there an app out there like Opal, that can work like this...? Set up... Use limit: 15 Minutes Cool down Time: 5 minutes Then... I use the app for 12 minutes Leave for 5 minutes, or more, and come back Use up to another 15 minutes Currently, the blocking apps I have used will only reset after you fully use 15 minutes. I think if there was an app with this feature I would feel rewarded for walking away early instead of scrolling until I get stopped. Thanks for any suggestions!

The problem, in the searcher’s words

I want a screen time blocker that acts like a battery instead of an all-or-nothing timer. Right now if I set a 15-minute limit, apps like Opal only reset the clock once I've fully burned through all 15 minutes — even if I only used 12 and walked away for a while.

What I actually want: use the app for 12 of my 15 minutes, step away for at least 5 minutes as a 'cool down,' come back, and still have some time left (or a partial refill) instead of losing the rest or having to wait for a full reset. It would feel like I'm being rewarded for walking away early instead of just getting cut off when the timer runs out.

I don't want to have to 'earn' time by doing chores or tasks — I just want unused time to roll over or refill proportionally to how long I stayed away, like a cooldown mechanic in a game.

What the thread shows

One user clearly articulates a specific mechanic missing from existing blockers, a commenter validates it as a novel concept, and two others point to partial workarounds — suggesting the exact feature isn't standard but adjacent tools exist.

Thats a cool idea. An app that acts like a usage battery, charged by inactivity. I havent heard of any apps like this

Stay Focused. If you use up your assigned time the app will be blocked for a certain period, but if you stop using app by then it will eventually refill

Target customer

Who

People using screen-time or app-blocking tools to control compulsive phone/app usage (e.g. social media, games)

Context

They hit this problem when they're actively trying to self-regulate usage with a blocker like Opal, and feel discouraged because stepping away early gives them no benefit — the timer only resets after full use, so there's no incentive to stop before the limit.

What to build

  • Set a usage limit (e.g. 15 min) and a cooldown window (e.g. 5 min)
  • Track active app usage in real time and pause the timer when the user exits the app
  • Refill unused time proportionally based on time spent away (battery/cooldown logic)
  • Block access once the full limit is consumed with no time left
  • Simple dashboard showing remaining time and refill progress
  • iOS/Android screen time API integration for enforcement

Build note — Requires OS-level screen time / app usage APIs (iOS Screen Time API, Android UsageStatsManager) to track foreground time and enforce blocking; battery-style refill logic needs to run reliably in the background, which is a known constraint on iOS.

Who’s already out there

Opal
high
Visit

Screen time and app blocking tool with usage limits and scheduled blocks.

Gap: Per OP, the timer only resets after the full limit is used — no partial credit or refill for walking away early.

Stay Focused
low

App blocker where exceeding your assigned time triggers a block period that eventually refills.

Gap: Refill mechanic exists per a commenter's description, but it's unclear if it offers proportional partial credit for stepping away before hitting the limit, or only refills after a full block period.

Achieve!
low

App usage limiter where you earn a bank of screen time by completing to-do list tasks.

Gap: Requires actively earning time through tasks rather than passively refilling based on walking away, which is the specific mechanic OP wants.

Demand read

The thread shows genuine interest in a specific missing mechanic (one commenter calls it 'a cool idea' and says they haven't seen it before), but no one in the thread states they would pay for it or describes an existing paid workaround, so durability of demand can't be confirmed from this source alone.

Worth digging into before you build

6 to consider

No idea is a sure thing at this stage — these are open questions worth checking yourself, not a verdict against building it.

Thin Source

Only 5 comments and one short OP post; limited material to validate broader demand.

Single Voice

Only the OP fully articulates and wants this specific feature; other commenters mainly point to existing alternatives rather than corroborating the pain themselves.

Already Solved

Commenter says Stay Focused already refills blocked time after a cooldown, which may substantially overlap with the requested feature — reviewer should verify Stay Focused's actual mechanic.

Generic Idea

Screen time/app blocking is a saturated category (Opal, Freedom, Forest, Stay Focused, Achieve!); differentiation may be hard to sustain.

Weak Demand

No statements in the thread about willingness to pay or existing paid workarounds for this specific feature.

Verify Competitors

Stay Focused and Achieve! feature details are based only on brief commenter descriptions, not verified independently.
