App to Stop Phone Addiction While Studying
A virtual co-working and phone-lockout app that pairs students with accountability partners on camera during study blocks.
Guys Please help I can't study !!🫤🥲
I am living in a hostel and for the past few days because there is no one to keep a strict watch up on me I am endlessly scrolling Yt shorts and Instagram for 10 days and I can't get the same studying momentum right now at all and as soon as I sit to study I feel the urge to use my phone. I can't break free of this addiction and I need to study daily. Can anybody help me get the required concentration and focus? lam open to all criticism, advice, or remedy you guys suggest me? I can also chat on DMs. Please help me.
The problem, in the searcher’s words
A student living away from home (hostel) with no one 'keeping a strict watch' finds themselves endlessly scrolling YouTube Shorts and Instagram for days straight. The moment they sit down to study, the urge to check their phone takes over, and they can't recreate their old study momentum. They describe it explicitly as an addiction they can't break free of on their own.
They've tried asking for help and gotten scattered advice: give the phone to a roommate, use Pomodoro, go to a library, try virtual co-working with camera on. But they don't know where to find 'good software' for accountability partners, and they keep hitting the same wall — without external structure or someone watching, their brain drifts to 'other useless topics' within minutes.
Other repliers confirm the same core struggle in their own words — one mentions ADHD making long study sessions 'impossible,' another admits their 'dumb brain' avoids studying by taking breaks. The pattern: people know willpower alone isn't enough, and are looking for some external structure (partner, camera, timer, restriction) to substitute for supervision they don't have.
What the thread shows
The OP and several commenters independently describe the same pattern — inability to self-regulate phone use while studying without external accountability — and the OP explicitly can't find software for the virtual co-working/accountability solution suggested to them.
“there is no one to keep a strict watch up on me I am endlessly scrolling Yt shorts and Instagram for 10 days and I can't get the same studying momentum right now at all”
“if I do that my dumb brain will start to get distracted without the phone too and will start hovering upon other useless topics, how would you suggest me to break free of that?”
“Have you tried virtual co-working with a partner? You can both keep cameras on and you'll have that added accountability to stay off your phone.”
“I don't know any good software for that.Would you please share some?”
Target customer
Who
Students (especially those living away from home in hostels/dorms) who struggle with short-form video and social media compulsion during study time
Context
They hit this problem when unsupervised (no parent, roommate, or study partner enforcing focus) and need to prepare for exams but default to scrolling instead of studying, often over multi-day binges.
What to build
- Camera-on virtual co-working rooms matched by study goal/time block
- Shared timer with Pomodoro-style work/break cycles visible to both partners
- Check-in prompts every set interval where partners state and confirm progress
- One-tap phone/app lockout (block short-form apps like YouTube Shorts, Instagram) during active session
- Simple session history log to track streaks and total focused time
Build note — Camera/video pairing requires WebRTC infrastructure; app/site blocking requires OS-level permissions (iOS Screen Time API, Android Digital Wellbeing/Accessibility APIs), which are more restrictive and harder to enforce than desktop blockers.
Later, if it lands
Who’s already out there
Pairs users with a stranger for camera-on virtual co-working sessions at a scheduled time.
Gap: Not study-specific (mixes work and study use cases), requires scheduling in advance rather than on-demand matching, and doesn't include phone/app lockout — the OP still needed a separate answer for blocking distracting apps.
Gamified app that blocks phone use by growing a virtual tree during focus sessions; tree dies if you leave the app.
Gap: Blocking is self-enforced (user can just kill the tree and leave), with no external accountability partner — the thread shows this OP specifically needs someone else watching, not just a game mechanic.
Website and app blockers that restrict access to distracting sites/apps for set periods.
Gap: Blocks distractions but provides no social accountability or co-working structure, which is what commenters specifically recommended and OP said they lacked.
Demand read
The thread shows repeated, corroborated pain (OP plus multiple commenters describing the same procrastination pattern) and an explicit unmet need for accountability software, but no one in the thread states a price or paid workaround, so durability of paid demand is unconfirmed.
Worth digging into before you build
3 to considerNo idea is a sure thing at this stage — these are open questions worth checking yourself, not a verdict against building it.
Generic Idea
Focus/phone-blocking and virtual co-working apps are a saturated category (Forest, Focusmate, Freedom, Cold Turkey already exist); differentiation is unclear from this thread alone.
Weak Demand
No one in the thread mentions paying for a tool, naming a price, or describing a paid workaround — willingness_to_pay_signals is empty.
Sensitive Domain
OP explicitly frames this as an 'addiction' and references struggling with self-control/mental focus; editorial review recommended before publishing given mental-health framing.
