An iOS App to Block Apps All Day Except a Flexible Break

An iOS app blocker that locks a chosen app list during a set 'shift' window but lets the user trigger one flexible break of a defined length whenever they need it.

App for iOS for flexible breaks

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’m not the most tech savvy so I’m struggling to explain what I’m looking for in an app. Basically I want an app that will block a set list of apps from 9 am to 9 pm with the exception of a one hour break at a time of my choosing. Basically my break isn’t at a consistent time, and I do value being able to veg out for it, but I can’t find an app that’ll have the flexibility of setting a “shift” and a flexible break any tips would be very appreciated

The problem, in the searcher’s words

I want an app that blocks a set list of apps from 9am to 9pm, except for a one hour break I can take whenever I want during that window. My break time isn't consistent day to day, so fixed schedule blockers don't work for me.

I've looked around but can't find an app with this kind of flexibility — most screen time and focus apps assume a fixed schedule, not a 'shift' with a break that moves depending on the day.

I'm not that tech savvy, so I'm also struggling to even describe what I need when I search for it, which makes finding the right app harder.

What the thread shows

A single user articulates a specific, fairly niche unmet need (shift-based blocking with a movable break), and two commenters offer only partial workarounds rather than confirming a dedicated tool exists — there's no independent corroboration of demand beyond the OP.

Could you use Foqus with an NFT tag and keep the tag somewhere you can access it on your break to unblock your phone at the start of your break and reblock it at the end?

Target customer

Who

Shift workers or people with irregular daily schedules (e.g. retail, healthcare, hospitality) who want to limit phone/app use during work hours but need their break time to be flexible rather than fixed

Context

They want distraction-free work hours but their break doesn't happen at the same time every day, so standard fixed-schedule screen time or app-blocking tools don't fit their routine.

What to build

  • Set a daily shift window (e.g. 9am–9pm) during which selected apps are blocked
  • Choose which apps/categories are blocked during the shift
  • One-tap 'start my break' button that unblocks apps for a preset duration (e.g. 1 hour)
  • Automatic re-block when the break duration ends
  • Simple non-technical onboarding (the OP explicitly says they're 'not the most tech savvy')

Build note — On iOS this would need to use Screen Time / Family Controls API (ManagedSettings, DeviceActivity) to enforce app blocking and scheduling, which has known limitations around dynamic/on-demand schedule changes — worth validating feasibility early.

Later, if it lands

Who’s already out there

Focus Friend
low

Mentioned by a commenter as an app with 'a lot of flexibility' for focus/blocking, though not an exact match for the OP's need.

Gap: Commenter explicitly says it's 'not exactly' what the OP is looking for — implies it lacks the flexible, shift-based break scheduling requested.

Foqus
low

Suggested workaround: use an NFC tag to manually unblock the phone at the start of a break and reblock it at the end.

Gap: Requires a manual physical workaround (NFC tag) rather than native flexible-break scheduling — not a built-in solution to the stated problem.

Demand read

The pain is plausible for shift workers with irregular breaks, but the thread contains no statements about paying, existing paid tools, or costly workarounds — demand cannot be confirmed as durable from this source alone.

Worth digging into before you build

6 to consider

No idea is a sure thing at this stage — these are open questions worth checking yourself, not a verdict against building it.

Thin Source

Only 4 comments and a score of 1; too little material to strongly validate demand.

Single Voice

Only the OP expresses the specific pain; commenters offer workaround suggestions rather than corroborating the same need.

Weak Demand

No willingness-to-pay signals anywhere in the thread.

Generic Idea

App/screen-time blockers are a saturated category (Freedom, Opal, One Sec, etc.), making differentiation and SEO ranking hard.

Verify Competitors

Cannot confirm feature sets or even continued existence of 'Focus Friend' and 'Foqus' as named by commenters; verify before publishing.

Unsupported Field

demand.willingness_to_pay_signals is empty due to lack of evidence in the thread.
