A Hyperfocus Break Reminder App Idea for People Who Forget to Eat and Drink
A break-enforcement timer that interrupts hyperfocus sessions with unskippable prompts to eat, drink, and move.
How do i stop this from happening?
Guys, Im 17, I've been trying film making at home by myself and a phone, since I don't know what I want to do in my life, this is one of the things I love to do, I am sticked to shorts and reels all the time, but whenever I pick something to do which I like as a task, I just can't get out of it, I forget entertainment, I forget exercise, I forget food, and even water. Really, I need help, you may feel like it's a blessing, but I really feel shit at the end of the day for ignoring other aspects of life. Please help me.
The problem, in the searcher’s words
I get so absorbed in a project I love that I lose all track of time. I forget to eat, forget to drink water, forget to move, and by the end of the day I feel awful even though I was 'productive.' I don't have ADHD diagnosed but this feels like that kind of tunnel vision, and I don't know how to build in stops without killing my focus.
I've tried just 'remembering' and it doesn't work. I need something external — an alarm, a schedule, a physical cue — that forces me to notice my body again, because left to my own devices I will not stop on my own until I'm already depleted.
This isn't about willpower, it's about not having any structure around a self-directed task, the way school or a job would normally provide.
What the thread shows
The OP's hyperfocus while filmmaking leads to skipped meals, water, and exercise, and commenters respond with generic workarounds (alarms, scheduled breaks, a visible water bottle) rather than pointing to a dedicated tool built for this.
“I forget entertainment, I forget exercise, I forget food, and even water.”
“Film for 1 hour, then force a food and water break.”
“alarms/timers on your phone to remind you. it snaps you out of it and you can take your break right there and then.”
“Big bottle/flask/jug of water visually on the desk infront of me definitely helped with hydration”
Target customer
Who
Teens and young adults with hyperfocus tendencies (diagnosed or self-suspected ADHD) doing self-directed creative work like filmmaking, editing, or coding
Context
They hit this when working solo on a task they love with no external structure — no school bell, no coworker, no boss — to interrupt them, so basic needs (food, water, movement) get missed for hours.
What to build
- Start-a-session timer tied to a task (e.g. 'filming', 'editing')
- Full-screen forced interrupt at a set interval (e.g. every 45-60 min) that requires acknowledgment to dismiss
- Simple break checklist (water, food, stretch) the user checks off before resuming
- One-tap note/journal field to capture where they left off, to ease the return to task
- Customizable work-block and break-length schedule
Build note — Could use iOS Screen Time API / Android UsageStatsManager to detect when a specific creative app is open and auto-start the session timer; core loop otherwise just needs local push notifications and a checklist UI — no health-data integration required for MVP.

Who’s already out there
ADHD-friendly visual daily planner with timers and reminders for tasks and routines.
Gap: Requires the user to manually schedule breaks in advance; it doesn't detect an in-progress hyperfocus session or force an interrupt mid-task the way the thread describes needing.
Focus timer that blocks phone distractions while a 'tree' grows during a work session.
Gap: Designed to keep you locked into a task, the opposite problem — it has no built-in prompt for food, water, or exercise breaks.
Virtual body-doubling — you book sessions with a stranger on video to stay accountable to working.
Gap: Helps people start and sustain focus, but has no mechanism for interrupting a session to enforce self-care breaks.
Demand read
No one in the thread mentions paying for a tool, names a paid product they already use, or describes a costly workaround, so the demand shown here is real pain but unproven willingness to pay.
Worth digging into before you build
4 to considerNo idea is a sure thing at this stage — these are open questions worth checking yourself, not a verdict against building it.
Single Voice
Only the OP frames the food/water/exercise neglect as a problem; commenter Gloomy-Flounder-8931 instead reframes the behavior as a strength, not something to fix.
Generic Idea
Solution space overlaps heavily with existing focus-timer and ADHD-planner apps (Forest, Tiimo); differentiation is narrow (forced break interrupts specifically).
Weak Demand
No pricing mentions, paid-tool references, or willingness-to-pay statements appear anywhere in the thread.
Sensitive Domain
Thread touches on self-care and ADHD-adjacent health behavior (skipping food, water, exercise); recommend editorial review before publishing.
