An App to Quit Social Media Without Losing Motivation

A focus app that replaces the urge to scroll for motivation with a short, controlled dose of curated inspiration, then redirects back to a study timer.

help a random teen out. Quitting social media fully.

Hi I am high school student final year 12th grade currently studying for college entrance exam since 10th grade i deleted instagram and I haven't used it since 2 years But I still use pinterest and yo*tube And my now I feel like those both apps are now destroying my productivity I have so many hours to study but I only spend like 2 hours doing basically nothing (very little work) because of creating fake scenerios and sometimes listening to music by side And if I don't want to work I pick up pinterest I read some quotes and i keep on scrolling after some times I reach to memes content , they make my mood lighter so I go back to study nd I see i already spent 1 hour on phone Like what. And ok I am considering to fully quit now social media Not even use Yo*Tube But the thing is , I feel like I am missing on things? When I firstly quit my Instagram, i thought pinterest is better as I would be mostly seeing pictures, which is true , I only used 30 mins phone ,picked pinterest up and just got motivated (like successful people's speeches ) and inspired seeing art Nd it genuinely made me very positive than I used instagram But now I feel like I am overusing it too And I want to quit it One thing is I just feel like i won't be"as positive" as I was using pinterest or yo*tube like I just saw motivational content Even though I have 0 action taken in the day And I just don't know man I will fully quit this Would I miss out on something? Ofc I would but I am totally fine with missing out on useless stuff , I don't know man Did someone fully quit their social media and felt better? also , without social media , i overthink my past and future and make fake scenerios, that's why I pick up my phone to not listen to my mind , and it is disturbing me in my studies as during studies I think of past)future/overthink random useless stuff , and again. Pick up my phone. (Or maybe even laptop for that case) I just don't know. I am ready to fully QUIT. but HOW WOULD I DEAL WITH IT , HOW WOULD I DEAL WITH MY THOUGHTS??.

The problem, in the searcher’s words

A student trying to study for a major exam keeps losing hours to Pinterest and YouTube, even after already quitting Instagram two years ago. The pattern: open the app 'just for motivation,' get pulled into memes or unrelated content, and look up to find an hour gone. They want to fully quit but worry about losing the genuine boost they get from motivational quotes and speeches — the fear isn't missing entertainment, it's missing the emotional lift that makes them feel positive.

Underneath the scrolling is a harder problem: without the phone, they're left alone with overthinking — replaying the past, imagining fake future scenarios, spiraling during study sessions. Picking up the phone is described as a way to 'not listen to my mind.' So the ask isn't just 'block the app,' it's 'what do I do with my thoughts once the distraction is gone.'

What the thread shows

One student's detailed, self-aware account of a scroll-relapse-overthink cycle, with light commenter agreement on reframing the phone's role — but no second voice independently describing the same struggle, and no one offering money or naming a paid tool.

Your phone should be a tool and entertainment, not your source of joy

Target customer

Who

High school or college students preparing for a major exam who have already tried quitting one social app but relapse into 'lighter' apps like Pinterest or YouTube for motivational content

Context

During high-stakes study periods, when boredom or anxiety about the exam triggers phone use, and 'harmless' motivational scrolling quietly turns into long sessions of memes or unrelated content

What to build

  • App/site blocklist with a 'motivation-only' unlock: user gets a fixed, time-boxed feed (e.g. 3 quotes or a 60-second clip) instead of open-ended access
  • Hard cutoff after the time box ends, redirecting to a study/focus timer
  • One-tap logging of 'why I picked up my phone' (bored / anxious / overthinking / avoiding work) to build a personal pattern view
  • Simple prompt or breathing/journaling micro-exercise offered when the trigger is 'overthinking' instead of unlocking the feed
  • Daily/weekly summary of time saved vs. baseline usage

Build note — Would need to build on top of OS-level app-blocking APIs (iOS Screen Time / Family Controls, Android UsageStatsManager) since third-party apps can't fully block system apps without these; the 'motivation-only' curated feed would need original or licensed content since scraping Pinterest/YouTube feeds is not viable.

Later, if it lands

Curated, opt-in motivational content library (quotes, short talks) so users aren't tempted back to algorithmic feedsStudy session streaks tied to successful redirectsCommunity/accountability pairing with peers also studying for examsIntegration with existing screen-time APIs (iOS Screen Time, Android Digital Wellbeing) instead of a separate blocker

Who’s already out there

Forest
high
Visit

Gamified focus timer that blocks phone use by growing a virtual tree during study sessions

Gap: Blocks access but offers no substitute for the motivational lift the user is seeking, and doesn't address the overthinking that triggers pickup in the first place

Freedom
high
Visit

Cross-device app and website blocker for scheduled focus sessions

Gap: Purely restrictive; doesn't help the user manage the anxious/overthinking state that drives the urge to unlock the phone

One Sec
medium
Visit

Adds a mindful pause/breathing prompt before opening distracting apps, encouraging users to reconsider

Gap: Closest existing match to the thread's need (interrupting the automatic pickup), but doesn't offer the curated 'quick motivation dose' or track the underlying trigger (bored vs. overthinking vs. avoidance)

Demand read

The thread shows a real, specific behavioral loop (motivation-seeking scroll turning into relapse) but contains no statement of willingness to pay, no mention of paid tools, and only one voice describing the problem in depth — insufficient to establish durable paid demand from this source alone.

Worth digging into before you build

6 to consider

No idea is a sure thing at this stage — these are open questions worth checking yourself, not a verdict against building it.

Thin Source

Only 2 low-score comments and a single low-upvote post; not enough material to confidently size demand.

Single Voice

Only the OP articulates the pain in detail; both commenters give generic, unrelated advice rather than corroborating the same struggle.

Not Software Solvable

OP's core issue is overthinking/rumination and emotional reliance on motivational content, which a blocking app can interrupt but not resolve.

Generic Idea

Social media/app blocking is a saturated category (Forest, Freedom, One Sec already well established).

Weak Demand

No willingness-to-pay statements anywhere in the thread.

Sensitive Domain

Post involves a teen's mental health, rumination, and exam stress; needs editorial review before publishing.
