A Screen Time Reminder App That Nudges Without Blocking
A lightweight iOS app that shows a periodic popup with your cumulative screen time for the day, with no blocking or cooldown.
Recommendations for iOS screentime message apps?
Ages ago, I had an iOS app that would just give a popup message every fifteen minutes telling me how much time I'd spent on my phone that day. It worked great - it disrupted my flow just enough for me to remember that I needed to do other things without making it impossible for me to use my phone when I needed to. I can't even remember the app's name, but they pushed an update and that feature went away. Are there any apps that do that today? I've done my best to block things with ScreenZen interruptions every fifteen minutes, but that doesn't give me a cumulative count and (equally frustratingly) means I'm interrupted and slowed down at times when I actually need to check my phone.
The problem, in the searcher’s words
I used to have an iPhone app that just popped up every 15 minutes and told me how much total time I'd spent on my phone that day. It wasn't a blocker — it just nudged me enough to remember I had other things to do, but I could still use my phone right away if I actually needed to. The app killed that feature in an update and now I can't find anything that does the same thing.
I've tried ScreenZen instead, but it's not the same: it forces a 15-second cooldown before you can get back into an app, and it doesn't show you a running total of screen time for the day. That cooldown is a huge annoyance when I just need to look something up quickly, like an address. I want the awareness without the friction.
Is there any app today that just shows a cumulative screen time count on a timer, without locking me out or making me wait?
What the thread shows
OP has a specific, well-articulated pain point about existing blockers imposing unwanted friction, but only one other person replied and their comment offers generic advice rather than corroborating the same need.

“ScreenZen requires a fifteen second cooldown, which is a huge amount of time if I’m trying to look up an address or something.”
“The app I had just has a ppp down notification saying I’d now spent an hour total on my phone.”
Target customer
Who
iPhone users trying to cut down screen time who find hard-blocking apps like ScreenZen too disruptive for daily use
Context
They hit this problem when they need quick, unblocked phone access (e.g. looking up an address) but still want periodic awareness of their cumulative daily usage without a forced cooldown.
What to build
- Interval-based popup notification (default 15 min, user-adjustable)
- Cumulative daily screen time count shown in each popup
- Instant dismiss, no cooldown or lockout period
- Customizable notification message/tone
- Uses iOS Screen Time / DeviceActivity API for usage data
Build note — Would need to build on Apple's Screen Time API / DeviceActivityMonitor extension; Apple restricts background monitoring and notification frequency, which may limit how precisely a 15-minute interval popup can be implemented.
Later, if it lands
Who’s already out there
Blocks access to chosen apps/websites at intervals and enforces a cooldown period before allowing re-entry.
Gap: Forces a 15-second cooldown that frustrates users needing quick access, and doesn't display a cumulative running total of screen time, per OP's direct comparison.
Screen time management app that schedules blocking sessions for distracting apps.
Gap: Built around blocking/scheduling rather than a passive, non-blocking cumulative-time nudge.
Inserts a brief mindful pause before opening selected apps to interrupt automatic phone-checking habits.
Gap: Still adds a friction/delay step similar to ScreenZen rather than a frictionless cumulative-count reminder.
Demand read
The thread shows real frustration with existing tools' friction, but no one states a price, mentions paying, or explicitly says they'd pay for a fix — demand is plausible but unconfirmed.
Worth digging into before you build
5 to considerNo idea is a sure thing at this stage — these are open questions worth checking yourself, not a verdict against building it.
Thin Source
Only one post and 4 comments (1 substantive commenter), limited material to fully validate the idea.
Single Voice
Only OP articulates the specific non-blocking-nudge pain; the sole commenter gives generic advice rather than corroborating it.
Generic Idea
Screen time management (blockers/trackers) is a saturated category with multiple existing players like ScreenZen, Opal, and One Sec.
Weak Demand
No explicit willingness-to-pay statement; OP's use of ScreenZen is mentioned as a workaround, not as a paid/costly one.

Opal and One Sec feature-set descriptions are inferred, not confirmed in-thread; verify before publishing.
