An App to Build Self Motivation Without External Accountability
An app that replaces a lost external accountability figure with tiny, cue-anchored nudges that make starting a task automatic.
I am not sure why i am half assing everything.
I was a person who starts always earlier and completed the work earlier than usual. But to be put exactly I had my grandpa who was right at my head to tell/push to complete the work asap. I had never internalized anything it was his push that I completed everything early. Now it has been a long time since he passed but the nudge to complete work doesn’t even arise for me.i have to forced every time to complete work.I am not talking about hard work it might be simple text in what’s app that I might have been putting off for a literal job which I wanted. Everything starts for me with high enthusiasm but the work just pauses. Can someone help me with this.I am not sure what to do at this point. Guide/Correct me where should I work on
The problem, in the searcher’s words
I don't know why I'm half-assing everything lately. Someone used to push me to get things done, and now that they're gone, even something as small as texting someone back feels impossible to start. I know what I need to do, I just can't seem to make myself begin.
It's not about effort once I'm in motion, it's the starting that's the wall. I keep waiting to feel motivated again but that feeling isn't coming back on its own, and I don't know how to replace whatever that external nudge was doing for me.
What the thread shows
The thread shows one person's struggle with initiating tasks after losing an external source of accountability, with commenters agreeing the fix is a deliberately engineered substitute cue rather than waiting for motivation to return — but no one else independently reports the same problem or any willingness to pay for a solution.
“I am not sure why i am half assing everything.”
“The nudge was always outside you, so when he passed there was nothing left holding the start together. That muscle doesn't just switch on once the person's gone, you have to build a stand-in for it on purpose.”
“Even a whatsapp text stalls for you, which points at the start being the real hurdle rather than the effort.”
“Create an artificial internal source of push and motivation. I used to do this and I call it prodding.”
Target customer
Who
Someone who relied on a specific person (parent, grandparent, mentor, partner) for daily accountability or motivation and now struggles to start tasks after that person is no longer present
Context
They hit this problem in the vacuum after losing that relationship or routine, when even trivial actions (replying to a text) stall because the external prompt that used to trigger action is gone.
What to build
- Let users define one 'anchor' routine (e.g., morning coffee) to attach a nudge to
- Nudge delivers a single, extremely small first step (e.g., 'open the chat, type one line')
- Push notification timed to the anchor event, not a fixed clock time
- Simple log of completed vs skipped nudges to show pattern over time
- Ability to write a personal 'why' note attached to each nudge for context
Build note — Core mechanic is behavioral (implementation intentions / habit stacking), not data-heavy — could be built as a lightweight notification-scheduling app with local storage; no complex integrations required for MVP.
Later, if it lands
Who’s already out there
iOS habit tracker that reminds users to complete self-defined tasks and tracks streaks.
Gap: Tracks habits generically by time of day, not anchored to a personal replacement for a specific lost accountability relationship, and doesn't scaffold the 'tiny first step' framing the thread describes.
Pairs users with a stranger for live video body-doubling sessions to start and complete tasks together.
Gap: Provides external accountability again (a stranger), rather than helping someone build the internal 'stand-in' push the thread's commenters say is actually needed.
Commitment-contract app where users stake money against completing goals, with optional referee/accountability partner.
Gap: Relies on financial stakes or another person as the motivator, not on rebuilding an internal cue system after a personal accountability source is gone.
Demand read
No one in the thread states a price, names a paid tool they use, or says they'd pay for a solution, so willingness to pay cannot be established from this source.
Worth digging into before you build
5 to considerNo idea is a sure thing at this stage — these are open questions worth checking yourself, not a verdict against building it.
Thin Source
Original post body is '[removed]'; only the title and 13 short comments are available, limiting depth of evidence.
Single Voice
Only OP (via title) expresses the actual pain; commenters offer advice/theory but don't corroborate experiencing the same problem themselves.
Generic Idea
Habit-stacking/nudge/accountability apps (Streaks, Focusmate, stickK) are a saturated category; differentiation on 'replacing a lost accountability figure' is a thin angle to build a full product around.
Weak Demand
No statements in the thread about paying for a tool, using a paid tool, or describing a costly workaround.
Not Software Solvable
The core issue described (grief/loss of a personal relationship providing motivation) is psychological; software can support habit formation but reviewer should assess whether an app meaningfully addresses the root cause.
