Dynamic prioritization and focus-shielding task manager
Is every office job this chaotic? I'm mentally exhausted every day.
Hey y'all. I recently started working in an administrative role in the maintenance department of an industrial company. I genuinely like my coworkers, and I enjoy the work itself, but the constant stream of demands is driving me insane. The biggest issue is that priorities change constantly. I'll make a mental plan for the day, but before I can follow it, a new "urgent" report shows up, someone needs a purchase request processed immediately, or another unexpected task appears. It feels impossible to stay on track. Upper management also doesn't seem to prioritize anything. They assign a lot of tasks, but rarely explain what the actual priority or deadline is. So I'll postpone one task because something new seems more urgent, only to have someone ask the next day why the original task isn't finished yet. On top of that, I'm constantly interrupted. I'll be focused on something at my computer when someone walks into the office needing something "right now." Even if I tell them I'll get to it later, my concentration is already gone. And then there are the meetings. So many meetings. Most of them don't seem to accomplish much. People get sidetracked, joke around, chat about unrelated things, and by the end we've somehow left with even more tasks than we started with. To complicate things further, I'm currently being evaluated for autism. My psychiatrist hasn't made a diagnosis yet, but regardless of whether I end up meeting the criteria, I know I get mentally exhausted from this environment. By the time I get home, I usually don't have the energy to do anything else, and sometimes I'm still drained on the weekends. Social interaction feels incredibly taxing after a full day at work. My boss tells me not to take work so seriously, but it's hard when it feels like I'm carrying an endless backlog that I can never actually finish. Things only get completed when they become urgent enough that I have to rush them. Is this just what office jobs are like? Or is this workplace unusually chaotic? I've already started using Microsoft Planner and keeping detailed notes, which helps me avoid forgetting things, but sometimes it just makes me more anxious because I can literally see how much work is piling up. I'd really appreciate any advice from people who've dealt with similar environments, especially if you're autistic or struggle with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.
The evidence
priorities change constantly', 'management... rarely explain what the actual priority or deadline is', 'Microsoft Planner... makes me more anxious because I can literally see how much work is piling up'
The idea
A tool that filters out non-urgent tasks to reduce anxiety while providing a clear, prioritized path for 'urgent' requests in high-interruption environments.
Why it scored high
The user describes a specific failure of current tools (Microsoft Planner) to manage the psychological load of an overwhelming, poorly-prioritized backlog.
